A black eagle chick has hatched at Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in 2025. With experienced parents Makatsa and Mahlori caring for the nest, bird lovers are watching closely. The garden, located near Roodekrans in Johannesburg, is home to one of South Africa’s most closely followed eagle pairs.

After a Peregrine flacon caught a pigeon, a famous Verreaux’s Eagle stole it, and a fierce mid‑air chase ensued, and the eagle looked for a gap to make an escape to its nest.
